About Oysterminds

Oysterminds is an independent reference on oysters: what they are, where they grow, how they taste, and the people who farm and serve them.

What Oysterminds is

Oysterminds has two parts that share one aim.

This website, oysterminds.com, is the long-form reference: 220 oyster profiles, each covering origin, species, growing water, farming method, season, flavor and producer, with its sources listed; a journal of 71 articles on taste & science, environment & sustainability, culture and travel; an atlas of growing regions with their salinity, water temperature and tides; and a directory of 31 producers.

The Oysterminds app, at app.oysterminds.com, is the reference for the moment at the table: a curated index of 381 oysters from 23 countries with their salinity, sweetness, minerality, umami, finish, texture, origin, cultivation, lemon verdict and what to drink alongside, plus a personal tasting log. It works offline and needs no account.

The app indexes more oysters than this site profiles. A website profile is the long, sourced version, written once there is enough checkable information to support one.

How we work

Our content draws on first-hand tasting and observation, direct contact with growers, merchants and hospitality professionals, and published sources, including scientific and industry literature. We prefer primary sources: peer-reviewed research, government and regulatory records, trade data and producers' own records. Profiles and articles list their sources at the foot of the page so any claim can be checked.

Taste, terroir and season vary by harvest, handling and palate, so we present them as informed editorial judgment rather than fixed fact. The full standards are in our editorial policy.

Who is behind it

Oysterminds™ is written and edited by people with subject-matter knowledge of oysters and hospitality, drawing on tasting experience and work with the industry. Where it helps, we consult or cite experts. Software, including AI tools, may assist with research and production; a person is responsible for the accuracy and final form of everything we publish.

Alongside the editorial work, Oysterminds runs a small advisory practice for restaurants, hotels, producers and publishers. It is kept separate from editorial coverage: a client does not get favorable treatment.

Independence

  • We do not run advertising or affiliate links.
  • No producer pays to be listed, profiled or rated.
  • We do not sell oysters or take commissions on anything we recommend.
  • If a commercial relationship ever bears on something we publish, we will disclose it next to that content.

Using and citing our work

Search engines and AI assistants are welcome to read, index and cite the site (see Search engines and AI systems in our Terms). When you quote or summarize a page, please name Oysterminds and link to it. For licensing or republication, see the professionals page.

Corrections

If something we have published is wrong, tell us at support@oysterminds.com with the detail and any supporting source. We review every request and correct material errors promptly.

A note on health

Oysters are a major food allergen, and raw shellfish carries inherent risks, including allergic reaction and Vibrio infection. Oysterminds is an editorial reference and does not give medical, dietary or food-safety advice. See the full notice.
