Basic Profile
Carantec and the Bay of Morlaix have been farming oysters since 1892. Carantec alone has about 15 oyster farms, working more than 700 hectares of beds and producing more than 6,500 metric tons a year.1
From Flats to Bags
The bay was long known for flat oysters, Ostrea edulis. After the flat oyster epidemics of the 1970s most growers switched to cupped oysters, farmed in bags.2 In 2023 the growers formed an association, L'Huître de la Baie de Morlaix, to promote the bay's oyster heritage, and it runs an oyster festival each spring.2

What Makes Morlaix Unique
Morlaix is a working oyster bay more than a brand: more than 6,500 metric tons a year from one town's farms,1 and a new growers' association that treats oyster farming as an early warning system for a changing sea.2
