Basic Profile
Arcade is the place in Pontevedra province where the most oysters are sold, and the town's name is attached to the Galician flat oyster. The oysters themselves are now grown on rafts in the outer Ría de Vigo. Culture in the inner ría, at Arcade's door, was lost decades ago.1
Ostreares
On 21 August 2026 Galicia's sea ministry, the Arcade fishermen's guild and the regional marine research centre at Ribadeo laid 103,500 seed of the European flat oyster in the Enseada de San Simón, the inner bay. The seed was raised by the research centre. The work is part of a project called Ostreares, running from 2024 to 2027 with European maritime and fisheries funding, to restore the oyster and the sand flats it lives on.1
The same species is being rebuilt across Europe, as described in our piece on flat oyster restoration. Galicia's raft-grown oysters are covered in the Ría de Arousa profile.
